EastEnders bosses have today (March 1st) announced the return of Ellen Thomas to the cast, playing a brand new character.
Thomas will be joining the soap as a new matriarch for Albert Square although show bosses are keeping tight-lipped on just who she is playing. Bosses have teased the character will have ‘various ties to Albert Square’.
The character has been promised to stir up the Square with her “tough-talking” nature. Thomas’ character will make her first on screen appearance later month.
However, some viewers may notice that Thomas has actually been in EastEnders before playing Grace Olubunmi for two years (2010-2011). Also, she appeared in a guest role as Pearl Chadwick in 1990.
Speaking of her new role, Thomas commented: “This is one of the most formidable and complete characters I’ve ever played. I’m really looking forward to the delicious mayhem she’s going to bring to Albert Square.”
Dominic Treadwell-Collins (EastEnders’ executive producer) added: “Ellen Thomas belongs on EastEnders. Like many actresses before her, she’s been in the show playing a different role – thank goodness Linda Henry didn’t just play Mandy’s mum – but this is the role she was born to play.
“Albert Square now has a new steely matriarch – with a few twisted secrets hidden behind her beaming smile…”
EastEnders continues Monday at 8pm on BBC One.
