EastEnders’ executive producer, Dominic Treadwell-Collins has teased there’s ‘two massive twists’ coming up for iconic couple Kat and Alfie and reveals they will be ‘gone for a while’.
Speaking to Radio Times, Treadwell-Collins said: “There are two massive twists coming up for Kat and Alfie in the next couple of weeks in the main show that will give you clues as to what the spin-off show is about.”
“We want to create something big around them. EastEnders as a brand can afford to do it and I’ve always wanted to do something like that. I’m from Ireland originally, so it’s a place I know well. Shane’s Irish, Jessie’s half Irish – so, there’s an Irish connection between all of us.
“The other important thing about the spin-off show is it’s not just about Kat and Alfie – we’ve created a whole new world and a new lot of characters. The writers have created a really lovely, interesting world, but also with our style of storytelling.”
Speaking about whether or not EastEnders would suffer if the soap lost two of it’s most iconic character, Treadwell-Collins said: “Not at all because we’ve got the strongest cast we’ve ever had. And the show can keep moving without Shane and Jessie.
“We’re in a very envious position and I would never have sacrificed either the health of EastEnders or Kat and Alfie’s characters. But, in this instance, they can stand on their own in the new series.”
Kat and Alfie’ spin-off series is set to be released next year, while filming commences this Autumn.
