Ben Mitchell, played by Harry Reid, has been arrested for the murder of Lucy Beale, despite being completely innocent.
In scenes which aired this evening, EastEnders returnee DCI Jill Marsden arrived on the doorstep of Phil Mitchell looking to speak to Ben. The Mitchell clan gathered together to find Ben and help him escape. However, by the time Jay found Ben, so did the police.
Following a short dash through the Square, Ben was arrested for his niece’s murder.
Nevertheless, viewers will be aware that Bobby Beale was actually the killer.
Speaking about the speculation that Max – who will be taking a year long break from the soap – would be the one arrested, Reid said: “It’s been all over the magazines that it’ll be Max. I’ve even been at home and my mum has been saying, ‘It’s got to be Max who’s getting nicked, hasn’t it?’ I’ve just said, ‘Yeah probably, you’d think so wouldn’t you?’ (Laughs.) I enjoyed that, but I told my mum to make sure she tuned into the last two episodes of the week!
“I think everyone had forgotten about Ben, which really surprises me. I’ve been reading all of the articles around this and it hasn’t even been mentioned that it could be him. Even the public have been saying that it’s ‘obviously Max’, so I think it’s been really cleverly done here. Jake [Wood, who plays Max] has said that he’ll be leaving for a little while, so that made everyone think that it must be Max.”
EastEnders continues this Monday at 8pm on BBC One and BBC One HD.
