Alcoholic Phil Mitchell is to receive life changing news when he is diagnosed with a killer disease.
In shocking Christmas scenes, the Walford hard-man is told he has cirrhosis of the liver and that the damage is irreparable and he could face an early death if he carries on heavily drinking.
Steve McFadden, who plays Phil, is said to be excited to be involved in such an important storyline to show the consequences of heavy drinking.
The British Liver Trust were delighted that EastEnders had chosen to cover the issues, saying: “In the UK we have an epidemic of liver disease and the main cause of death from liver disease is alcohol-related.
“It’s fantastic EastEnders have decided to highlight how people can literally drink themselves to death. We all need a much better awareness.”
Sadly, each year 4,000 people die from cirrhosis in the UK and 700 need a transplant.
