This year was a huge year for Walford. We were treated to brilliant drama with some memorable performances and episodes. Lucy Beale’s killer was revealed, Kathy Beale came home, Jack Branning shocked viewers with his return on Christmas Day and much, much more. We were all on the edge of our seats eagerly awaiting the answer to the biggest question of the year.
Now, onto 2016. It’s set to be a massive start to the year kicking off with two episodes on New Year’s Day. Finally we will see Mick and Linda enjoy their wedding day. Ok, you’ve all watched the trailer. I don’t think enjoy is the right word unless Linda is a fan of water ‘sports’. These episodes are set to be brilliant viewing and kick off 2016 in style. Below, I will take you through what to expect from EastEnders in the New Year from a host of character returns to some very big stories. Happy New Year!
We haven’t seen Louise since August 2010 but she is making a big return in early 2016. Now played by Tilly Keeper, Louise, the daughter of Lisa Fowler and Phil will appear back on our screens and add another dimension to the Mitchell clan. The team at EastEnders are keeping quiet to why Louise is returning but with Phil spiralling out of control, I’m sure her return will have a big impact. I’m not expecting an easy ride for Louise as we all know it’s not exactly easy being a Mitchell. Her relationship with her half brother Ben will be one to watch and of course how will Phil react coming face to face with his daughter for the first time in five years? Can she be the one who will finally get Phil off the bottle, only one way to find out!
Another Mitchell is heading back to Albert Square. As we’ve already seen with the Christmas episodes it hasn’t been a great time for Phil and his family. Poor Dennis is in hospital, Roxy has sadly seen Dean’s true colours and Ronnie’s feud with Vincent rolls on. So with Roxy and Ronnie struggling to cope, what would you need the most? That’s right, your mother coming back. Glenda, played by Glynis Barber is briefly returning to EastEnders for 2016. We haven’t seen Glenda since 2011 so again expect a huge impact upon her return. This is a huge time for the Mitchell family and with nearly everyone turning their backs on Glenda in the past, how will they react when she returns?
As most of you will be aware Charlie is returning to the Square. Unfortunately his return will be as brief as they come after the reveal of several secrets cause poor Charlie to suffer a fatal heart attack. If Fatboy and the deadly showdown between the Carter’s wasn’t enough, then prepare yourselves as Charlie’s death is set to rock Walford. As the drama unfolds in very early January we will witness Kat discover from Sister Ruth that she gave birth to another baby during her labour with Zoe. It becomes clear that someone has been harbouring this secret and in true Slater style a messy confrontation becomes too much for Charlie as he suffers a huge heart attack. Kat’s sister, Belinda returns but will the Slater family be able to pull through what is set to be a ‘tearjerker’ of a storyline throughout January?
Doesn’t sound like our beloved Walford folk our going to enjoy a very happy new year, does it? And if you thought that was all the drama for January and beyond then you’re wrong. Following on from Charlie’s death with see Stacey spiral out of control. We’ve already seen glimpses of her postpartum psychosis and the troubles continue for the new mother. Paranoia will drive Stacey to the brink as she believes everything is against her and in dramatic scenes we will witness Stacey on top of the Queen Vic. Be prepared for upsetting scenes and a wonderful performance from Lacey Turner.
Another character who will battle through a difficult situation in the New Year is Phil. Over the Christmas period we have witnessed Phil being diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver and his excessive drinking. EastEnders have worked closely with the British Liver Trust to ensure Phil’s battle is presented accurately as possible so expect this story to one of the biggest in early 2016. Steve McFadden has put in some stellar performances recently and I’m looking forward to watching this story unfold and seeing a different dynamic to Phil as he faces the toughest few months of his eventful life!
EastEnders fans everywhere, get excited… Jay is finally set to step into the limelight with a huge storyline in 2016. This is great news for fans and also Jamie Borthwick who I think has deserved a big storyline for a long time. All the details are unknown as DTC only teased at a press event that Jay will actually have one of the biggest storylines in 2016. So I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.
Dominic Treadwell Collins has also revealed that a big story for Denise will roll out in 2016 so she is another character to watch out for! But show bosses are keeping tight-lipped about her storyline. Could it be related to her visit to see Lucas in prison?!
It’s been one hard hitting Christmas and as I’ve discussed this continues throughout January and beyond. Last night saw Dean finally admit to raping Linda. Next up we have the New Year’s Day episodes which air on BBC One at 18:30 and 20:00. The trailer teases electrifying scenes with Mick and Dean battling it out in the water. Will they all survive a dramatic New Year’s Day?
