After receiving a phone call from Phil Mitchell, Mark Fowler rocked up on Albert Square tonight (11th August) to find out who his dad really is.
So, with younger and newer fans confused as to who Mark Fowler really is, we thought we’d give the rundown on Mark Fowler, as well as the actor who plays him, Ned Porteous.
After Sharongate in 1994 (everybody knows what that is!), Sharon Watts’ marriage to Grant Mitchell swiftly ended and resulted in her leaving Walford. Angry about the way he treated her best friend, Michelle Fowler confronted Grant, which then resulted in a one-night stand between the pair in 1995.
Michelle then discovered that she was pregnant with Grant’s baby so confided in her brother Mark Fowler (played by Todd Carty). She’s then offered a job in Alabama, and decides to take it so that she’s away from Grant and the Mitchells.
Mark Fowler later told his brother Martin (now played by James Bye) about Michelle’s baby secret. In 2006 Martin then told his mum, Pauline Fowler, who the father of her grandson is, before she then died.
More recently, Michelle discovered that Peggy Mitchell had cancer and was dying so she wrote a letter to her which revealed all about the grandson she never knew she had. Unfortunately this arrived too late, and Peggy had already died.
As viewers have seen this week, Phil found this letter, called Mark, and this is where we are now!
Phil calls Mark Fowler to tell him about his real father
Mark was born and raised in Florida, United States by his mother, Michelle, and his father (who adopted him), Tim. He’s 20 years old, in his second year of college, and is on his Summer vacation so has come to Walford after this mysterious phone call he received.
After leaving drama school about a year ago, this is Ned’s first major television role. Previously you may have seen him in an episode of BBC One’s Holby City, where his character was treated in hospital.

Ned Porteous has said, “Being part of two iconic families and the longest kept secret in EastEnders history is beyond exciting! I’m honoured to be here and can’t wait for viewers to properly meet Mark Jr.”
On working with Ross Kemp, Porteous added, “He’s the most interesting man I’ve ever met in my life – just the epitome of cool!”
EastEnders continues tonight (Friday 12th August) at 8:00pm, on BBC One, where viewers will see Mark Fowler’s first full episode.
